Many have struggled with symptoms since childhood, and receiving a diagnosis tends to place their life experiences in perspective: So thats why I had such a hard time concentrating in school. And, even better, now they can get treatment.

AD/HD have been shown to affect all aspects of a person's daily functioning including job and academic performance, social/romantic relationships, and self-esteem. AD/HD even affects sleep with many individuals reporting difficulty falling asleep, sleeping through the night, waking-up the next morning or remaining alert throughout the day. Research (including hundreds of studies) and clinical experience have shown that stimulant medications are the most effective first-line treatment for reducing the core symptoms of AD/HD. Medications combined with other therapies can significantly affect overall functioning and improve quality of life for those suffering from the disorder.

The program can be used instead of medication for children with mild to moderate symptoms or as adjunctive therapy for those taking stimulant medication. It alleviates inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms of ADHD by affecting specific aspects of the norepinephrine system. Atomoxetine has been tested on more than 1,600 children, adolescents and adults. It is a prescription medication, but it is not a controlled substance like a stimulant. This allows medical professionals to give samples and to place refills on the prescriptions. It does not start working as quickly as the stimulants do. Reports suggest that the full effects are often not seen until the person has been taking atomoxetine regularly for 3 or 4 weeks.

Study after study has shown that when children's diets are changed to include Omega3, Vitamin B12 and other health supplements such as zinc and magnesium, the change in their behavior is well documented. Many regions of the brain and several neurotransmitters have been implicated in ADHD. Biologically, the neurotransmitter dopamine has received considerable attention as being relevant to understanding ADHD. Neurologically, the prefrontal cortex seems to be relevant to understanding ADHD. The prefrontal cortex has a high requirement for dopamine, and plays a role in cognitive functions such as executive functions. The prefrontal cortex has many reciprocal connections with other brain regions, including the striatum (caudate nucleus, putamen), cerebellum and parietal cortex. Research has indicated that some of these brain regions are slightly smaller or have decreased activation in people with ADHD.

In the past, the first treatment offered to adults with ADHD has been stimulant drugs. ADHD studies show that approximately two thirds of adults with ADHD who are given these medications show significant improvement in ADHD symptoms. However, there are some difficulties in using stimulants to treat ADHD in adults. Stimulants are controlled substances and it is not uncommon for adults with ADHD to have or to have had problems with substance abuse. Short acting stimulants may wear off quickly and since adult patients administer the medication themselves, and usually have problems with forgetfulness, compliance can be problematic with multiple day dosing. Adults may experience significant difficulty in the evening when they do housework, pay bills, help children with homework or drive, or are tempted to use substances 'to relax'. Children may have difficulty paying attention and completing tasks, and can show excessive signs of hyperactivity, impulsiveness, or some combination of these behaviors. ADHD can lead to difficulties in school, work and home life.

Whether for children or adults, the treatment of ADD should be comprehensive and include a wide range of possible interventions, certainly more than medication or some other single step. Assistance should also be provided over the long-term, as ADD generally does not go away. The person being treated may not need to go see the doctor very often, but he should always know that help is just one telephone call away.

Strattera is in a class of medications called norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. Atomoxetine, unlike stimulants, may take several weeks for the full effect to be seen, but also has a low abuse potential. Atomoxetine might be an option for teens or college students when there is a concern about stimulant abuse or diversion ; if there is an accompanying tic disorder, or if significant anxiety is present.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15375603139931343386noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007077463091265322.post-56769658389368783182015-07-27T02:06:00.000-07:002016-10-09T00:11:40.512-07:00How To Deal With Bad Kids Behavior In Bad
How To Deal With Bad Kids Behavior In Bad

Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder ( ADHD ) may struggle to stay still, concentrate and control their impulses. Some children are able to manage their symptoms with help from a routine a strong support while others need medication to help them stay focused and on task. No matter what treatment option is right for your child you need to develop a plan that includes clear goals to strive for with their treatment.

You may wonder what accounts for the recent explosive increase in the rates of A.D.H.D. diagnosis and its treatment through medication. The lifetime prevalence in children has increased to 11 percent in 2011 from 7.8 percent in 2003 a whopping 41 percent increase according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And 6.1 percent of young people were taking some A.D.H.D. medication in 2011, a 28 percent increase since 2007. Most alarmingly, more than 10,000 toddlers at ages 2 and 3 were found to be taking these drugs, far outside any established pediatric guidelines.

The goal of this form of behavioral treatment is to teach self-control through verbal self-instructions, problem-solving strategies, cognitive modeling, self-monitoring, self-evaluation, self-reinforcement and other strategies. Typically, a therapist meets with a client once or twice a week in an attempt to teach the client through modeling, role playing and practicing cognitive strategies, the person can use to control his or her inattention and impulsive behavior. As a simple example, a child may be taught to say stop to himself when he is about to call out in class. Children with ADHD seem to lack these internal cues and so it was thought that teaching them such cues would be helpful. A few cases of atomoxetine-associated liver injury have been reported, and the FDA warns that the drug should be discontinued at the first signs of jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes) and liver problems. The AAP recommended the following: (1) primary care clinicians should establish a treatment program that recognizes ADHD as a chronic condition; (2) appropriate target outcomes designed in collaboration with the clinician, parents, child and school personnel should guide management; (3) stimulant medication and/or behavior therapy as appropriate should be used in the treatment; (4) if a child has not met the targeted outcomes, clinicians should evaluate the original diagnosis, use all appropriate treatments and consider co-existing conditions; and (5) periodic, systematic follow-up for the child should be done with monitoring directed to target outcomes and adverse effects. Information for monitoring should be gathered from parents, teachers and the child.

Diet continues to show links to ADHD, including chemical food additives, wheat, refined sugar, food allergies and artificial sweeteners While researchers may not know why more and more kids are being diagnosed with ADHD, reviewing charts about the American diet gives us some insight. Many parents are concerned that their child may have the disorder, marked by persistent inattention, hyperactive or impulsive behavior, or both. Those whose kids are diagnosed with ADHD want to make sure they get the best treatment. But as the number of children on medication for ADHD climbs, some experts worry that the disorder is being overdiagnosed and overtreated. To help sort out the complex issue, Berkeley Wellness turned to Stephen Hinshaw, PhD , a professor of psychology at UC Berkeley and co-author (with Richard Scheffler) of The ADHD Explosion: Myths, Medications, Money, and Today's Push for Performance (Oxford, 2014).

ADHD is very often a chronic condition. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, about 30 - 65 percent of children with ADHD continue to experience symptoms through adolescence and into adulthood. ADHD can cause many problems in adulthood including impaired physical and mental health, poor work performance, and financial stress.

Full implementation of the action statements described in this guideline and the process-of-care algorithm might require changes in office procedures and/or preparatory efforts to identify community resources. The section titled Preparing the Practice in the process-of-care algorithm and further information can be found in the supplement to the Task Force on Mental Health report. 7 It is important to document all aspects of the diagnostic and treatment procedures in the patients' records. Use of rating scales for the diagnosis of ADHD and assessment for comorbid conditions and as a method for monitoring treatment as described in the process algorithm (see Supplemental Fig 2), as well as information provided to parents such as management plans, can help facilitate a clinician's accurate documentation of his or her process.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15375603139931343386noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007077463091265322.post-26571818513567357582015-06-11T06:32:00.000-07:002016-10-09T00:11:40.342-07:00How To Deal With Children's Behaviour Problems In The Classroom
How To Deal With Children's Behaviour Problems In The Classroom

Many children have ADHD, a disorder that affects the attention, activity level, and functioning ability of school age children.

The MTA was designed and conducted in the early 1990s, before the extended release formulations of stimulant medications became widely available. The MTA used immediate release methylphenidate (Ritalin), which was administered three times a day. Currently, most children receiving stimulant treatment for ADHD are given a once-a-day dose of medication in the morning. However, this difference in medication administration does not change the study's main conclusions.

Behavior therapy involves reinforcing desired behaviors through rewards and praise and decreasing problem behaviors by setting limits and consequences. For example, one intervention might be that a teacher rewards a child who has ADHD for taking small steps toward raising a hand before talking in class, even if the child still blurts out a comment. The theory is that rewarding the struggle toward change encourages the full new behavior.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15375603139931343386noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007077463091265322.post-16747520590909242732015-06-01T10:28:00.000-07:002016-10-09T00:11:40.302-07:00Need Help With My Child's Behavior Charts
Need Help With My Child's Behavior Charts

Are your child's tonsils causing him problems when sleeping?

I know of schools which have changed their lunch menu and the teachers are much happier than before because behavior problems decrease and I can assure you it is not because the kids are asleep.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15375603139931343386noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007077463091265322.post-90703711957020685002015-05-22T08:47:00.000-07:002016-10-09T00:11:40.250-07:00How To Deal With Bad Behavior In The Workplace
How To Deal With Bad Behavior In The Workplace

To prepare for each appointment, write down your questions ahead of time and leave space under each one to fill in the answers.

ADHD becomes perceptible at the early school-age, but it may stick with adulthood. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - ADHD is often succeeded to the successor. The child that gets affected by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder needs to have support and love, in order to attain their full potential. They should be provided with such guidance, love and understandings from parents, teachers, and guidance counselors and also through some public awareness programs.

Common psychostimulant medications used in the treatment of ADHD include methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, Metadate, Focalin); mixed salts of a single-entity amphetamine product (Adderall, Adderall XR); and dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine, Dextrostat). Methylphenidate, amphetamine and mixed salts of amphetamine are now available as both short- and long- acting preparations. Short-acting preparations generally last about 4 hours; long-acting preparations are more variable in durationwith some preparations lasting 6-8 hours and newer preparations lasting 10-12 hours. Of course, there can be wide individual variation that cannot be predicted and will only become evident once the medication is tried.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15375603139931343386noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007077463091265322.post-57372963707810599452015-05-19T18:32:00.000-07:002016-10-09T00:11:40.235-07:00How To Stop Bad Behavior In Kittens
How To Stop Bad Behavior In Kittens

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a form of treatment which helps people make concrete, observable changes in their lives. There is a focus on the ways a person's thoughts and attitudes affect his feelings and behavior. The premise is that some people develop negative and distorted beliefs about themselves which interfere with their functioning. This can lead to depression and anxiety, as well as the procrastination that affects so many adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Cognitive therapy helps people examine the beliefs that are holding them back and learn strategies to counteract those beliefs.

A behavior intervention plan (BIP) could be helpful, too. Behavior interventions are steps teachers take to stop problem behaviors at school. A BIP outlines how teachers and the school will deal with a child's inappropriate behavior. A BIP also explains how teachers and the school will encourage appropriate behavior. Your child may, for example, have a reward system in place to encourage more positive behaviors.

Then the teacher made an important change to the boy's worksheets: She wrote the correct answers on them with invisible markers so that the boy could reveal the correct answer by coloring over the space as soon as he finished a question. The teacher also randomly inserted stars he could uncover by coloring and told him he would earn a reward for collecting four stars. The strategy paid off: The boy was soon answering every question and getting 84 percent of them correct.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15375603139931343386noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007077463091265322.post-28358905866311502062015-05-14T13:20:00.000-07:002016-10-09T00:11:40.213-07:00How To Deal With Bad Behavior In A 1 Year Old
How To Deal With Bad Behavior In A 1 Year Old

Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the outlook for most children who receive treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is encouraging. There is no specific cure for ADHD, but there are many treatment options available. Each child's treatment must be tailored to meet his individual needs.

Behavioral interventions might help families of children with hyperactive/impulsive behaviors that do not meet full diagnostic criteria for ADHD. Guidance regarding the diagnosis of problem-level concerns in children based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Primary Care (DSM-PC), Child and Adolescent Version, 3 as well as suggestions for treatment and care of children and families with problem-level concerns, are provided here. The current DSM-PC was published in 1996 and, therefore, is not consistent with intervening changes to International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). Although this version of the DSM-PC should not be used as a definitive source for diagnostic codes related to ADHD and comorbid conditions, it certainly may continue to be used as a resource for enriching the understanding of ADHD manifestations. The DSM-PC will be revised when both the DSM-V and ICD-10 are available for use.

This group met over a 2-year period, during which it reviewed the changes in practice that have occurred and issues that have been identified since the previous guidelines were published. Delay in completing the process led to further conference calls and extended the years of literature reviewed in order to remain as current as possible. The AAP funded the development of this guideline; potential financial conflicts of the participants were identified and taken into consideration in the deliberations. The guideline will be reviewed and/or revised in 5 years unless new evidence emerges that warrants revision sooner.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15375603139931343386noreply@blogger.com0
